MODULE3:
SURFACE vs PATTERN

overview

Overview

In this module, I was introduced to the concepts of pattern and surface by using Rhino software. Even though we were not required to fabricate the physical modeling, the constructability and developability were still crucially explored throughout the task.

My painting drapery pulls away from the top-right corner to the sides, whereas the main inclines of my assigned terrain move from the lowest central dip diagonally to the hump, which means the topography of the surface was somehow interfered by the painting.

Grid Study

In the grids study, I learned how to reflect the painting’s texture and flow by distorting the grid, after experimenting with many shuffling grids, I found that different distortions of the grid make the panels emphasize the areas differently.

Panel Study

In the panel's study, managing different numbers and shapes of the curve attractor allowed me to replicate over multiple iterations more easily and efficiently than Point attractors.

Hybrid study better helps me understand the interaction of the grid and panel, and how the combination of offset points, shuffle grids, and custom panels represent and define the 2D painting.

Artefacts

In the artefact, I attempted to emphasize the flow of the drapery, which was a result of the fabric positioned between two knees, by manipulating the different heights of panels. It was proved that taller pyramids with sharper curves could create shadows more effectively, whereas smaller pyramids assisted accentuate creases.

In my opinion, the final composition, which was derived from the flat painting and 3D terrain, best demonstrates the interaction of the 2-dimensional pattern and 3-dimensional surface that was incorporated in each artefact.
